Trump Sets Twitter on Fire With Two-Tweet Response to Bombshell Manafort Indictment

news, politics

President Donald Trump responded on Monday to his former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, being indicted on 12 counts, including conspiracy against the United States and money laundering.

And yes, he called for more scrutiny to be placed on Hillary Clinton and Democrats.

“Sorry, but this is years ago, before Paul Manafort was part of the Trump campaign,” Trump tweeted. “But why aren’t Crooked Hillary & the Dems the focus?????”

He then followed up that tweet with this definitive statement: “….Also, there is NO COLLUSION!”

The special counsel said in a statement on Monday:

The indictment contains 12 counts: conspiracy against the United States, conspiracy to launder money, unregistered agent of a foreign principal, false and misleading FARA statements, false statements, and seven counts of failure to file reports of foreign bank and financial accounts.

Predictably, Trump’s statement set his critics off:

However, the information available so far doesn’t make clear any connection to Manafort’s alleged crimes and his dealings with Trump. CNN reporter David Wright points out:

Still, it’s also possible this could be the first of many shoes to drop in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation.

For now, the talking point from the Trump White House appears to be that the charges against Manafort have nothing to do with Trump or his campaign.
