Friday’s announcement about the indictment of 13 Russian nationals for meddling in the 2016 US presidential election completely disrupted the news cycle.
The overwhelming majority of coverage of the announcement revolved around what it means for President Donald Trump. Unsurprisingly, what the revelation means for the legacy of his predecessor, Barack Obama, has been absent in most discussions.
However, one particular member of the liberal echo chamber has gone against the grain and called the former president out for not picking up the ball and squelching the problem before it even became an issue. In fact, this particular Senate Democrat, in an interview on Meet the Press, said that Obama didn’t do enough to stop the Russians from meddling in our elections!
That is bold.
From Daily Caller:
Sen. Bernie Sanders offhandedly criticized former President Barack Obama Sunday for not doing enough to warn voters about the Russian government’s attempt to meddle during the election.
Obama probably didn’t do enough to raise the red flag after he found out Russia involved itself in the U.S. election, Sanders said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” before pivoting to blasting President Donald Trump for downplaying Russia’s role.
“Obama was in a very difficult position and didn’t want to make it appear he was favoring Hillary Clinton,” the Vermont Independent said. “Maybe he should have done more.” An indictment announced Friday showed that Russian nationals helped both Sanders and Trump during their respective presidential candidacies.
The press continues to obliterate Trump and his administration over the indictment, but the fact remains that the meddling was rampant under Obama’s watch.
Why didn’t he do anything about it?
New protections must be enacted to prevent similar meddling in the future, Sanders noted, referring specifically to the upcoming 2018 midterm elections. “We have got to do everything we can to make sure that they do not undermine American democracy,” he said.
In short, the Obama administration dropped a ton of balls here, but far too little attention is being paid to that fact. And only Bernie Sanders, of all Democrats, is asking the tough questions about Barack.
It’s not out of the realm of possibility to assume that’s because the general consensus from the Left was that failed presidential candidate Hillary Clinton had things in the bag.
Those that continue to genuflect at the altar of Obama would be wise to take the blinders off, as there are far too many signs that there’s a whole lot more to see here.
