Sessions Puts California On Notice: ‘I’m Going To Use Every Power I Have To Stop’ Lawlessness

Attorney General Jeff Sessions threatened to retaliate against California on Wednesday over its defiance of President Trump’s hard-line immigration policies.

“California is using every power it has — and some it doesn’t — to frustrate federal law enforcement. So you can be sure I’m going to use every power I have to stop them,” Sessions warned at the California Peace Officers Association conference in Sacramento.

“California has enacted a number of laws designed to intentionally obstruct the work of our sworn immigration enforcement officers — to intentionally use every power it has to undermine duly-established immigration law in America,” Sessions added, a day after the Justice Department sued the state over so-called sanctuary policies that try to protect illegal immigrants against deportation.

The attorney general singled out Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf, who infuriated the administration recently by tipping off city residents that federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers were planning a major sweep of undocumented immigrants.

“The mayor of Oakland has actively [helped] aliens avoid apprehension by ICE. Her actions support those who flout the law and boldly validates illegality,” Sessions said.

“To make matters worse, the elected lieutenant governor of the state praised her for doing so, bragging about and encouraging obstruction of our law enforcement and the law. I’m afraid this is an embarrassment to the proud state of California,” he said.

ICE rounded up about 150 people during the sweep across northern California last month, but authorities said many hid out after the mayor’s heads up and avoided capture.

Gov. Jerry Brown, speaking after Sessions at the same event, mocked the lawsuit as a political stunt, said the administration was “full of liars,” and taunted that special counsel Robert Mueller was “closing in” on the White House.

“I do think this is pure red meat for the [administration’s] base, and I would assume — this is pure speculation — that Jeff thinks Donald will be happier with him and I bet Donald will be tweeting his joy with this stunt,” Brown said.

“Mueller is closing in. There are more indictments to come. So obviously, the attorney general has found it hard to be just a normal attorney general. He’s been caught up in the whirlwind.”

Brown accused the administration of “going to war” with California.

“Look, we know the Trump administration is full of liars. They’ve pled guilty already to the special counsel,” Brown said.
