Because of his faith, a Florida teenager said, he fatally stabbed a boy on his 13th birthday and injured two others during a recent sleepover.
Corey Johnson, a 17-year-old Muslim, was arrested Monday after confessing to stabbing three people during the birthday celebration at BallenIsles Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, the Palm Beach Post reported.
According to the Jupiter Police Department’s arrest report, Johnson turned to the Quran and violent jihadist videos “to give him courage to carry out his intentions.”
The troubled teenager reportedly told law enforcement officers he woke up around 4 a.m. on Monday at Kyle Bancroft’s home. Johnson decided he wanted to kill Kyle’s mother, Elaine Simon, Kyle’s 13-year-old brother, Dane, and Dane’s 13-year-old friend, Jovanni Sierra.
“In his statement, Johnson advised he stabbed the victims because of his Muslim faith,” the affidavit stated, according to Fox News.
Simon, hearing Sierra moaning in pain, hurried upstairs around 6 a.m. That’s when Johnson allegedly lunged toward her. Police say the 17-year-old teenager stabbed her a dozen times before she fell down the stairs. Johnson also reportedly stabbed Dane, who was trying to help his mother, 32 times.
Sierra was pronounced dead at the scene. Simon and Dane were rushed to a nearby trauma hospital after Simon ran to a neighbor, begging them to call 911. Kyle was not injured during the attack.
“She rang my bell, she’s bleeding,” the neighbor recalled. “Corey Johnson is out there with a knife. He’s a murderer. That’s all I know. They’re trying to help the kid — the kids filled with blood.”
Johnson reportedly told police Dane “made fun of” his Muslim faith and that Sierra referred to celebrities as “gods,” which is contrary to the Islamic faith.
Johnson was previously investigated for “alleged violent tendencies,” which the Jupiter Police Department, the Palm Beach County School District police, and the FBI had learned through “intelligence gathering.”
The alleged killer was taken into custody around 8 a.m. Monday by the city’s SWAT team after he tried to barricade himself in one of the home’s rooms.
